What is Chiropractic?

What is Chiropractic? It is a type of healthcare that focuses on the spine and joints of the body and how they connect to the nervous system. The word chiropractic comes from Greek words meaning “done by hand”. Chiropractors first used their hands to give adjustments, many still do, although instrument adjusting is also a common way to adjust now.

What is an adjustment? An adjustment is safe quick specific controlled force applied to a joint to move the bones back to their correct place which restores mobility and function and decreases pain and inflammation.

Chiropractors believe that if your spine is aligned and joints are moving well the body functions better. Nervous system signals are able to move through your body as designed and other systems (such as the heart, lungs, liver, etc.) in your body are able to function optimally.

What is the crack or popping noise when an adjustment happens? That is just air being released when the joint space is opened, not bones being cracked. Some people don’t like hearing this sound, and there are other ways of adjusting so you don’t have to hear that noise.

What should I expect after getting an adjustment? Many people are a little bit sore the next day but that goes away after a day or two. You should start to feel relief from any pain you were experiencing prior to the adjustment. More mobility and less tightness in the areas of adjustment should be expected as well.
