Are you getting enough Vitamin D?

Winter on the San Juan Islands brings shorter days and not very much sunlight. Sunlight is your body's best souce of Vitamin D. You can get small amounts of Vitamin D from foods (Fish, milk, cheese, egg yolks) but most people in the Pacific Northwest do not get enough Vitamin D without taking a supplement.

Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption which helps build and keep strong bones. Some research also suggests that it may help with immune function and may improve depression systems and help with seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Without enough Vitamin D in children they can devleop rickets (a softening of the bones). In older people Vitamin D and calcium are vital in preventing osteoprosis (brittle bones). It is recommended that people living in the Pacific Northwest take 5,000 to 10,000 IU of Vitamin D a day.
